The City of Burnsville Building Inspections Division helps ensure building safety and protects community character by enforcing zoning and building code regulations.
Building permits are needed to ensure that minimum construction standards (established by the Minnesota State Building Code) are met. These minimum standards provide safegauards for life, limb, health, property and welfare by regulating design, construction, materials, use and the type of occupancy of all buildings. A building permit must be obtainined any time a building or structure is built, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved converted or demolished. Permits ensure that construction in Burnsville meets local and state codes.
Getting a Permit:
Residential building permits for re-siding, re-roofing and window replacements; plumbing and mechanical permits; and some electrical permits, can be applied for and paid for
. Other residential permit applications can take up to five working days to process. All Commerical building permits can take up to two weeks for processing.
Applications for permits should be submitted well in advance of the scheduled construction start date. This will allow time City staff to offer assistance and issue permits by the start of the project. This is especially true during the summer construction season.

Various inspections are required for all permits. An "inspection record card" will be issued to identify the inspections that are required for each project.
An orange inspection record card must stay on the site until a final inspection has been scheduled and completed. This card contains important information about the job, and is used to record all inspections performed. City inspectors will inspect a project several times during the course of construction for things such as footings, framing, insulation, rough-in and final electrical, plumbing, mechanical work and final inspection. (Photos of ice and water barrier and house wrap must be
or dropped off at City Hall before roof and siding projects can be inspected.)
To schedule an inspection please contact the Building Inspections Department between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 952-895-4444.
