Citizens Academy
The Burnsville Police Department offers a Citizens Academy each fall to members of the community. The academy offers an inside look into the Department’s operations.

The academy consists of hands-on classes taught over an 11 week period to familiarize participants with police work and how the community can help prevent crime.

Class Topics

  • Learn the history of and tour the police department
  • Review of common police calls/ laws of arrest/ handcuffing procedures
  • Functions of patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol traffic and K-9 units
  • Traffic stops/DWI demonstration
  • Officer survival, use of force
  • Driving course
  • Student involved scenarios, a Taser demonstration and shooting in our indoor range.

The academy is taught by Burnsville Police Officers, and participants are asked to make a commitment to attend each session.

Class Dates/Times
When:   Thursday evenings for 11 weeks 
             Sept. 5 – Nov. 14, 2013 
             6-9:30 p.m.

Where:  Burnsville City Hall 
            100 Civic Center Parkway

After the successful completion of this program, graduates will have an opportunity to ride-along with a Burnsville Police Officer for four hours during their shift.
