The academy consists of hands-on classes taught over an 11 week period to familiarize participants with police work and how the community can help prevent crime.
A wide spectrum of topics will be covered, including:
Learn the history of and tour the police department
Review of common police calls/ laws of arrest/ handcuffing procedures
Functions of patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol traffic and K-9 units
Traffic stops/DWI demonstration
Officer survival, use of force
Student involved scenarios, a Taser demonstration and shooting in our indoor range.
The academy is taught by Burnsville Police Officers, and participants are asked to make a commitment to attend each session.
When: Thursday evenings for 11 weeks
Sept. 5 – Nov. 14, 2013
Where: Burnsville City Hall
100 Civic Center Parkway
After the successful completion of this program, graduates will have an opportunity to ride-along with a Burnsville Police Officer for four hours during their shift.
