2015 Citizens Academy - Registration Closed
Due to an overwhelming response from the community and limited class size, registration for the 2015 Citizen's Academy is now closed.

Look for 2016 registration to begin in May or June 2016.

Burnsville Police Department Offers Citizens Academy for Members of the Community to:
  • Take an 11-week course, taught by Burnsville Police Officers, to become familiar with police work and how the community can help prevent crime.

Citizen Academy participantsClass Topics
  • History of and tour the police department
  • Review common police calls/ laws of arrest/ handcuffing procedures
  • Functions of patrol, investigations, SWAT, physical evidence team, domestic abuse response team, negotiators, bike patrol traffic and K-9 units
  • Traffic stops/DWI demonstration
  • Officer survival, use of force
  • Driving course
  • Student involved scenarios, a Taser demonstration and shooting in our indoor range.

Class Dates/Times
 When:  Thursday evenings for 11 weeks 
Sept. 10 - Nov. 19
6-9:30 p.m.
 Where: Burnsville City Hall 
100 Civic Center Parkway

Participants are asked to make a commitment to attend each session. After the successful completion of this program, graduates will have an opportunity to ride-along with a Burnsville Police Officer for four hours during their shift.
